The Department of Economic Sciences (DSE) of the University of Padova is entitled to the illustrious economist Marco Fanno, who has taught in the Faculty of Law of our University from 1920 to 1953. The Department was born in the 1990 and since then has gathered economists belonging to four Faculties: Law, Statistical Sciences, Political Sciences, and Economics. Currently, the Department is composed by university professors as well as different types of researchers, e.g. visiting professors, assistant professors, post-doctoral students, Ph.D. students, and other non-structured researchers.

Our Department’s members are involved in projects covering different areas going from industrial organization to the economics of financial institution, from mechanism design to corporate governance, from marketing to theoretical and applied econometrics, from monetary policy to corporate finance, labour economics, public finance, non-profit economics, economics of crime, and several others.

Such amplitude of scientific interests and competences has triggered the construction of several inter-disciplinary research groups whose members face real world problems from different viewpoints. This has enabled the Department to develop useful relationships with some territorial public agencies as well as local enterprises.

An important product of the Department’ multicultural research interests has been the Ph.D. in Economics and Management (SDEM), in which our students are asked to face various economic subjects during the first year, and to choose their main field of interest later. The student will then perform investigations in the chosen field under the supervision of one or more of the Department’s members.

Since its creation, the Department has had the goal to consolidate the scientific links with other Italian and foreign Departments and Research Institutes. In particular, the Department aims at maintaining a strong relationship with research’s international leaders. The recent institution of the Research Visiting Senior Fellowship is just an example along this line.

Thanks to such agreement, our Ph.D. students can visit the Department of Economics and Related Studies and attend them graduate courses offered over there. Moreover, they can ask to be enrolled in the Joint PhD Programme in Economics between the Universities of Padova and York. Moreover, our Department has an agreement with the Italy-MIT consortium, which enables some students of the SDEM to spend a visiting period at the MIT in Boston.

Relationships are also entertained with the School of Management of the Boston University and the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor.

One of the most important resources of our Department is its Library, accessible by students and professors belonging to the University of Padova, but also to external subjects (with some limitations). Its patrimony of approximately 25.000 volumes and 150 collections makes it one of the richest in the Italian Academic circle.
